Organization Setting
The International Centre for Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME) is established in Jordan, under the auspices of UNESCO. Its mission is to promote international collaboration in the Middle East and the Mediterranean region using synchrotron light for basic and applied research in physics, chemistry, biology, material sciences, environmental and medical investigations, archaeological studies and other research areas of relevance to the region. The centerpiece of SESAME is a 3rd generation Synchrotron Light Source with an energy of 2.0-2.5 GeV that will be constructed and operated by the Members of SESAME with the support of the international community. SESAME is an international scientific and technological centre of excellence open to all qualified scientists worldwide.
Assignment
Under the supervision of the Director of SESAME, and in close collaboration with the scientific and beam-lines committees, the incumbent will provide leadership and management of the scientific sector of SESAME. In particular, the Scientific Director will:
  • Direct the work relating to the concept and planning of the scientific programme of SESAME to ensure the efficient use of SESAME resources.
  • Identify users' needs in Member States, formulate and implement research and development projects that promote the utilization of SESAME research facilities.
  • Supervise the multidisciplinary teams of scientists who will use the SESAME facilities.
  • Monitor recent developments and carry out appropriate activities in areas relevant to SESAME's mission.
  • Be responsible for the preparation of the scientific component of SESAME reports, conferences, symposia, committee meetings, advisory groups, consultant activities, and Council meetings.
  • Participate as a member of the Board of Directors in formulating policy and developing innovative approaches and strategies to strengthen the efficiency and effectiveness of SESAME programmes.
  • " Act as focal point for the scientific programme for representatives of Member and Observers, donors, international organizations and laboratories for the mobilization of resources for SESAME's scientific programme.
  • Coordinate corporate management issues with the Directors of the Technical and Administrative sectors.
  • " Any other activities entrusted to him/her by the Director of SESAME.
Education and Experience
  • Outstanding senior scientist with an advanced university degree at doctorate level in physics, material science, chemistry, biology or a related field of science.
  • Several years relevant experience, including significant experience in managing large scientific and technological programmes, preferably in synchrotron radiation.
  • A broad background with scientific, as well as administrative leadership experience in basic science programmes.
  • Demonstrated experience in the technical formulation and implementation of international scientific cooperative projects.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • The candidate should preferably be a national of a Member of SESAME.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment, and lead a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers and technicians.
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills and ability to represent SESAME effectively.
  • Strong scientific leadership skills with the ability to formulate technically-sound programmes and projects relevant to SESAME’s mission, and the ability to prepare well-written programme/project proposals.
  • In-depth knowledge and demonstrated managerial skills and experience in synchrotron radiation.
  • Experience in the management of IT resources for scientific applications related aspects.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English.
Remuneration
Following evaluation of candidatures by the SESAME Council, it is expected to appoint the Scientific Director to a level equivalent to that of D-1 in the United Nations System, as existing in 2002.
