The acronym "SESAME" was selected to evoke memories of the culture of the region, i.e. "Open SESAME", but also because it describes in the shortest manner possible the Centre's Mission, namely to be open to all scientists of the world. The full name of the Centre (Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East) was designed to fit this acronym.
