General Description and Goals

The ICTP/IAEA Sandwich Training Educational Programme (STEP) aims at offering IAEA fellowship opportunities to Ph.D. candidates from developing countries in scientific fields covered by both the IAEA Technical Cooperation Programmes and falling in the scientific and technical competence of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) and its associated institutions.

The goal of STEP is to strengthen the scientific capability of young scientists and researchers from developing IAEA Member States in order to better contribute and serve the scientific, technical and economic development of their home countries.

Fields of Training

The STEP programme will provide fellowships for training and research in any of the following fields:

  • atomic and nuclear physics
  • medical radiation physics
  • nuclear, isotope and laser techniques applied to:
    • human health; agriculture; biotechnology; water resources; and environmental studies
  • synchrotron radiation
  • biophotonics
  • mathematical modeling and simulation.

Fellowship awards in any one of these fields will be determined by the specific needs of each developing country as identified by the IAEA Technical Co-operation Department.

Location of Training

Training and/or research work will take place in one or more of the following institutions located in Trieste (Italy): the ICTP, Elettra Synchrotron Light Facility, Trieste Laser Laboratory, International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB).

Training and/or research can also take place in one of European institutes with which ICTP has collaborative arrangements.

Structure of the Scheme

Fellowships are offered to students pursuing Ph.D. degrees in one of the above mentioned fields at universities of developing Member States of the IAEA. Once a STEP fellow is selected, ICTP will assign the fellow to the appropriate host institute with a designated advisor. The advisors from both the home and host institutes will jointly supervise the fellow's research. These two supervisors are expected to coordinate a research and training plan that culminates in the fellow's receipt of a PhD. degree from the home institute. The host advisor is also expected to participate on the fellow's examination committee.

The fellowship is intended to cover the expenses associated with the fellow's training and research work in the host institute for at least three months during the first year. Pending the approval of the host institute, the fellowship is renewable for up to three successive years.

Financial Support

The STEP fellowship includes a stipend intended to cover lodging and living expenses during each stay at the host institute as well as travel and medical insurance.

It is understood that, during all other times not covered by the STEP fellowship, namely when the fellow is present at the home institute, the fellow has the necessary support for continuing and finishing the research work.

Application Procedure

Detailed ICTP/IAEA STEP fellowship applications forms are available from the ICTP and also the IAEA web sites. Applications should be submitted directly to the ICTP Office of External Activities (OEA) after completion.

The application should reach ICTP before:
  • 15 January for training and research work starting in March or shortly thereafter;
  • 15 June for training and research work starting in September or shortly thereafter; and
  • 15 September for training and research work starting in January of the following year or shortly thereafter.
