Researchers from the New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, Germany, and the MS/XPD beamline of SESAME have published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS) a study of the mechanism used by Athel tamarisk (Tamarix aphylla), a xerophyte tree that grows along watercourses in arid areas, to capture water.

XEOL is an X-ray photon in/optical photon out technique that is related to the conversion of the X-ray energy absorbed by the materials to optical photons, involving multi-step energy transfer cascade processes. XEOL is now available at the end station of BM-08 XAFS/XRF beamline with emission spectra measurement capability under irradiation with X-ray beam.

At its 42nd meeting, the Council of SESAME approved Iraq’s request to become an Associate Member of SESAME. This will make Iraq the first Associate Member of SESAME, and will pave the way to its full membership in the future.

With BEATS, the fifth beamline at the SESAME (Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East) synchrotron was ceremoniously inaugurated on 6 June 2023. SESAME, operating since 2017, is an intergovernmental laboratory located near Amman (Jordan) and the only synchrotron facility in the Middle East and neighbouring regions.
