The beam commissioning and installation of the multilayer optical elements the BEAmline for Tomography at SESAME were completed in October and November 2023, thanks to the combined efforts of multiple SESAME teams. The multilayer mirrors of BEATS travelled a long way from France, where they were manufactured at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) multilayers laboratory. With this accomplishment, the beamline optics have been fully commissioned, and BEATS may now potentially operate with both white and monochromatic beam.
This is a major step forward in the creation of this state-of-the-art scientific infrastructure in the area. As its beam capabilities are fully realized, BEATS will undoubtedly make a substantial impact on research and scientific progress across disciplines, solidifying SESAME's status as a preeminent hub for research.
The experimental endstation of BEATS provides two X-ray imaging techniques, X-ray radiography and tomography. BEATS first delivered synchrotron light to its experimental station on 11 May 2023. Nature Middle East has described the experiment that led to the first 3D X-ray tomography scan performed at SESAME.
A video showing a comprehensive overview of the BEATS tomography beamline was filmed during the BEATS inauguration at SESAME, in June 2023. Click on the image below to view the video (this link directs you to the BEATS YouTube channel).
