CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) has issued a call for applications for two of its 2024 Summer Student capacity-building activities open to young scientists throughout the world from CERN Member States, Associate Member States and non-Member States.

One is the Summer Student Programme, which annually brings together at CERN students pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in physics, engineering, computer science, or mathematics. The programme provides students with a unique opportunity to join in the day-to-day work of research teams participating in experiments at CERN, to attend a series of lectures specially prepared for them, and to visit the CERN facilities. Discussion sessions and workshops are also key features of the programme. Candidates should have completed, before June 2024, at least 6 semesters of full-time university studies in one of the fields of the programme. Applications to take part in the 2024 programme are to reach CERN no later than 31 January 2024 at 12 noon (CET time).

The second is the Openlab Summer Student Programme for students pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, mathematics, engineering, or physics. Students taking part in this programme work on cutting-edge projects with CERN collaborators, thereby gaining hands-on experience with the latest computing technologies. They also participate in a series of lectures prepared for them by computing experts at CERN, in addition to the main lecture series for CERN summer students, as well as visits to the accelerators and experimental areas. Candidates should have completed, before June 2024, at least 6 semesters of full-time university studies in one of the fields of the programme. Applications to take part in the 2024 programme are to reach CERN no later than 31 January 2024 at 12 noon (CET time).

In both cases, applicants fulfilling the criteria for the activities are to be submit their applications to CERN online, here in the case of the Summer Student Programme and here in the case of the Openlab Summer Student Programme.
