Following the agreement for reconstruction of the roof of SESAME’s experimental hall signed on 20 April 2014 with the contractor who built the SESAME building, the contractor has provided a time schedule for dismantling the steel structure, and the design, fabrication and erection of a new one; a method statement for dismantling the sandwich panels and steel structure; and drawings for dismantling the cladding (first layer and sandwich panels), secondary steel and spine truss.
There are now two 50-ton cranes, heavy trucks, forklifts, and other machinery on the SESAME premises, and on 26 April workers, supervisors and engineers started dismantling the steel structure of the roof.
The contractor has bound himself to complete all the work and have a new roof fully installed by 18-20 October 2014.
In the meantime, the constructor has built two rooms of sandwich panels around the power supplies for the booster and the microtron that are placed in the service area. These rooms will protect the equipment from dust, and enable air conditioning during the summer season. They will also allow work on the microtron and booster not to be disrupted during reconstruction of the roof.
Since the roof caved in, the SESAME staff have been continuing their normal activities in their offices and laboratories.
During the week of 10-15 May, they will be working from the premises of IMAN 1, which is connected to the SESAME server, and from where they may access their e-mails and, when needed, have remote access to their office computers.
The SESAME Safety Committee will continue to work closely with the safety officer of the contractor to ensure a safe work environment for the staff.
