To help SESAME’s user community gain experience in the use of soft X-ray synchrotron, the HESEB project has launched a Twinning Programme for joint beam time with experienced users at a Helmholtz synchrotron facility in Germany.

Through this programme experienced synchrotron user groups will host new, inexperienced scientists for real-life hands-on training on how to apply for, how to prepare and how to perform beamtime, and finally how to carry out a sound data analysis of the measurements obtained on a beamline.

SESAME’s soft X-ray beamline, also known as HESEB (HElmholtz-SEsame Beamline), is one of SESAME’s Phase 1 beamlines. It will be a state-of-the art beamline in the soft X-ray energy range (between ~70 - ~1800eV) which is expected to come into operation in 2022. The optical, mechanical and vacuum components of the beamline are being constructed by five research centres of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, namely DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron), FZJ (Forschungszentrum Jülich), HZB (Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin), HZDR  (Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf) and KIT (Karlsruher Institut für Technologie). This is being done under the leadership of DESY.

Soft X-ray spectroscopy is a collective name for a wide range of techniques with which the electronic structure of atoms, molecular bonds and chemical characteristics of materials can be investigated. It has applications in the fields of health sciences, photonics, advanced materials, environmental sciences, nanostructures, petrochemistry and energy.

In order to meet the first collection date, full registration must be completed by July 6, 2020 at 11 a.m. CEST
