Allan, Jordan — His Excellency Mr Philip Hall OBE, the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Jordan, visited SESAME on 13 April, reaffirming the UK’s longstanding support for scientific collaboration and innovation in the region and beyond.
The United Kingdom is one of the Observer countries of SESAME. It has held this status since the inception of the project, and Ambassador Hall’s visit allowed him to see at first hand recent developments in the vital role SESAME is playing in advancing research and regional and international cooperation in science. He was received by SESAME’s Director, Dr Khalid Toukan, with whom there were discussions on SESAME’s scientific programs, strategic goals, and opportunities for further UK engagement.
During the visit, Dr. Toukan presented a comprehensive overview of SESAME’s progress and the key role the United Kingdom has played in this. “The UK has been a fervent supporter of SESAME not only in infrastructure and training but also in diplomacy and governance,” said Dr. Toukan. “This partnership reflects a deep belief in science as a bridge for peace and collaboration in the region and beyond.”
Ambassador Hall praised SESAME’s mission of fostering scientific excellence and international cooperation. “The United Kingdom is proud to have supported SESAME from its early days. It believes in the power of science to transcend borders, and sees SESAME as a shining example of that principle in action,” he stated.
The UK’s support has been multifaceted, ranging from leadership roles — including the presidency of SESAME’s Council by Professor Sir Chris Llewellyn-Smith — to significant contributions in training and equipment. UK scientists have helped to shape the scientific direction of SESAME, advised on beamline design, and supported operational upgrades. A number of UK institutions have hosted and trained young engineers and scientists from SESAME Members, reinforcing the facility’s commitment to capacity building and inclusion, particularly for women in science.
Dr. Toukan concluded by expressing appreciation for the UK’s continued commitment: “From the halls of the Daresbury laboratory to the corridors of the Diamond Light Source, the UK’s scientific community has stood beside us. This partnership has empowered a generation of scientists across the region — and will continue to do so.”
As SESAME continues to grow as a hub for innovation and cooperation, this visit marks a meaningful step in further strengthening the UK–SESAME partnership.
