Jordan was one of the IAEA’s Member States to organize an exhibition and meeting as side events during the 63rd session of the Agency’s General Conference held in Vienna from 16-20 September.

SESAME’s stand was one of the very numerous activities organized during the CERN Open Days held in Geneva on 14-15 September. Among these activities were site visits, experimental workshops, debates, exhibition stands, hands-on exhibits, film screenings and theatre performances, for which 75,000 visitors travelled to Geneva.

SESAME has up dated its traditional brochure and leaflet in order to reflect its relatively new role as a laboratory that is now receiving scientists who are using its facilities for their experiments. It has also produced a brochure highlighting the opportunities SESAME offers for industry.

On 1 August 2019, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources of Jordan, H.E. Engineer Hala Zawati, visited SESAME. She was accompanied by one of Jordan’s delegates to the SESAME Council, Abdul-Halim Wriekat, and staff members of her Ministry.

SESAME was the recent venue of the OPEN SESAME Environmental Science Thematic School held from June 23 to 27, 2019, which provided comprehensive training in synchrotron radiation applications in environmental science for 30 researchers from the SESAME Members.

On July 2-4, 2019, SESAME was host to the OPEN SESAME Safety Workshop at which 4 radiation safety experts from European light sources met the staff of SESAME to discuss the safety and radiation protection issues specific to a synchrotron radiation facility.

On 27-28 June, The Cyprus Institute (CyI) in Nicosia organized the workshop The Scientific Case for BEATS (BEAmline for Tomography at SESAME) at which various applications of high-resolution synchrotron radiation tomography were explored, as were applications particularly relevant to the SESAME Members.

Yesterday (June 27, 2019), SESAME and The Cyprus Institute (CyI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during a ceremony held in conjunction with the Workshop on the Scientific Case for BEATS (BEAline for Tomography at SESAME) organized by the CyI.

June 1, 2019 marks a historically important accomplishment for SESAME, where the very first scientific paper presenting results using data obtained at SESAME’s X-ray absorption fine structure/X-ray fluorescence (XAFS/XRF) spectroscopy beamline was published in Applied Catalysis B: Environmental.
