SESAME, which is the first synchrotron light source in the Middle East and neighbouring countries and has now received its first users, has recently appointed Professor Walid Zidan as its new Administrative Director.

A £1.5 million grant from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) through the Rutherford Fund has been awarded to the Diamond Light Source.

SESAME has appointed Professor Riccardo Bartolini as Technical Director to oversee its technical infrastructure through the laboratory’s start-up phase. SESAME, which is a third generation light source, produced its first light in 2017.

Professor Sir Chris Llewellyn Smith, the former President of the SESAME Council (2008-2017), was one of the speakers at the XXth Edoardo Amaldi Conference, International Cooperation for Enhancing Nuclear Safety, Security, Safeguards and Non-Proliferation held in Rome (Italy) from 9-10 October 2017.

Following an open call, nine students from SESAME members have been awarded training Fellowships to work in European light source laboratories in 2018.

The SESAME Council met at CERN on 14-15 May 2012. During the meeting a protocol was signed by the Director of SESAME and the Director-General of CERN which provides for CERN to take the lead.

SESAME Infrared laboratory is recognized as an Affiliated Centre of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, ICTP, in Trieste, Italy (Agreement OEA-AC-69).
